New Basketball initiative aims to help tackle crime and youth violence in Kent

Tigers in the Community is teaming up with StreetGames to take part in a new sporting initiative designed to help tackle crime and youth violence using the power of Basketball.

Kent Safer Through Sport works with young people who are at risk of falling into the criminal justice system and aims to offer them opportunities to grow, learn and enjoy themselves in a safe and respectful environment.

By providing young people with access to safe spaces, trusted coaches and fun sport and physical activity we aim to offer a positive pathway for at risk young people to learn new skills, make new friends, and build their self-confidence.

StreetGames has worked in the most disadvantaged communities in Kent with locally trusted partners since 2009. In the last 18 months, StreetGames & Kent Sport have invested over £142,000 into over 85 Doorstep Sport projects reaching 4000 participants aged 11-25.

Since 2018, StreetGames were awarded over £300,000 to work on the serious youth violence agenda in London and we are considered an integral partner on the National Alliance of Sport in Criminal Justice. We have also worked with Loughborough University to identify the 10 Key ingredients of a Successful Intervention that increases positive outcomes for young people on the verge of or already in the criminal justice system.

As a local partner who is already delivering effective basketball services across Kent with young people vulnerable to poor outcomes, we aim to work closely with StreetGames to support young people in Kent.

We will invest in training up young people to gain basketball related qualifications and skills that they can use to gain employment, help wealth building and thus improving their own communities.
